SANTA ANA – A gang member was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday for murdering a blind man in a plot to steal the victim’s car and sell it for its parts.
Aurelio Fidencio Saldivar, 31, of Costa Mesa, was found guilty last June of the execution-style shooting death of Raffi Yessayan, 26, in 2006.
Yessayan, who owned a black Nissan sedan with custom rims, frequently had to be driven by friends in his car because of his blindness, prosecutors said.
Saldivar and fellow gang members were driving Yessayan in his car that evening and planned to steal it, prosecutors said. Yessayan was later shot in a parking lot in Orange, they added.
Another man, Ruben Alejandro Oliveros, 28, of Santa Ana also was convicted of the murder, but was granted a new trial based on possible evidence that he may not have been at the crime scene.
Oliveros’ re-trial is scheduled for July 9 before Orange County Superior Court Judge Frank F. Fasel.
