A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in Anaheim early Sunday morning during a confrontation between rival gangs, Anaheim police said.

Police received calls around 1 a.m. about shots being fired in the 1100 block of North Lombard Drive in the northern part of the city. Police found a man lying in an alleyway, unconscious and bleeding profusely.

The man was suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, said Sgt. Rick Martinez. The man was transferred to UCI Medical Center, where he died.

Police believe that the man, a resident of Redlands, was a member of a criminal street gang. He had attended a party in one of the apartments lining North Lombard Drive when a confrontation between rival gang members broke out and shots were fired, Martinez said.

There is no description of the suspect yet, Martinez said. Homicide detectives and the gang investigation unit are continuing the investigation, he said.
