Salinas Police Arrest Gang Members In Two Separate Robberies, Assaults

Salinas police said two gang members were arrested Sunday and Monday in separate robberies involving assaults.

In the first case, witness reports and officer knowledge led Salinas police to arrest a gang member following an early Sunday incident in the 700 block of Holly Street.

In the second, a gang member was arrested after four people attacked and robbed a man early Monday in the 400 block of East Market Street.

Police called to the scene of a fight at 4:13 a.m. Sunday heard the sounds of a beating behind a fence, then heard several people jumping fences. A man they said had been beaten and bloodied emerged from behind the fence, they said. A perimeter was set up and a yard-to-yard search conducted, police said, but the suspects couldn’t be found.

The man, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment of bruises, cuts and a possible concussion, told police that two people approached him in the front yard of the Holly Street site and demanded his money at gunpoint. He told police they went through his pockets, then began punching, kicking and pistol-whipping him on the head and upper body.

Based on witness statements and officer knowledge of gang members in the area, police said they developed a possible subject.

Alejandro Arizmendi, 20, was arrested at his home without incident, police said, although officers are still looking for a second suspect and the black semi-automatic handgun used to threaten and beat the victim.

Arizmendi was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and gang enhancements.

In Monday’s incident, police said two male and two female suspects approached a man walking on East Market Street about 1:59 a.m. and asked “What do you bang?” — or what gang he belonged to.

They then attacked him, police said, striking him numerous times in the face, and stole his cell phone before fleeing on foot.

Officers responding to the area said they saw Steven Manriquez, 21, running on East Alisal Street near Griffin Street, and noticed his knuckles were bloody. Police said he was identified as one of the suspects, taken into custody, found to be on parole and an active gang member.

He was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of robbery, violating parole and gang enhancements.
