Two gang members have been arrested in connection with a Monday robbery during which a young tourist was shot in the head, La Mesa police said Thursday.

The incident was reported about 1:50 a.m. on El Cajon Boulevard near Keeney Street in La Mesa. The 16-year-old victim and his family were visiting from Paradise Valley, Ariz., and were staying at a nearby hotel. The teen was skateboarding when he was approached by two men who robbed him of cash and some personal items. One then fired a shot, police said.

Police initially reported that the teen, who was taken to a hospital, suffered a graze wound to the head. The boy’s father told KGTV/Channel 10 that doctors said that the shot penetrated the skull, but not the brain, and his son will recover.

On Tuesday, members of the East County Gang Task Force arrested Alvaro Regalado, 19, at his San Diego residence, La Mesa police said. The next day, members of the San Diego Police Department’s Gang Suppression Team arrested Juan Arriero, 20, near his residence in San Diego.

Both were booked into county jail on counts of attempted murder, robbery, being a gang member with a firearm, and participating in a criminal street gang, police said. Regalado also was booked on a count of being a probationer with a firearm and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. Arriero also faces a charge of making criminal threats.
