A man who was fatally shot by Inglewood police Tuesday night after officers said he reached into his waistband during a foot chase was identified today, authorities said.

Ruben Walton Ortega, a 23 year-old from Inglewood, was shot and ki*led in an alley behind the 11100 block of Crenshaw Boulevard about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s blankistant Chief Ed Winter.

Sgt. Gabriela Garcia, a spokeswoman for the Inglewood Police Department, said Ortega was a documented gang member of the Inglewood Family.

The incident began Tuesday when two officers with a uniformed gang task force received a call that men were loitering. When the officers arrived on scene, one of the men, identified as Ortega, ran south into an alley, and officers said they saw him discard cash and drugs, Garcia said.

One of the officers chased Ortega as he fled. The officer told investigators that Ortega confronted him, refused to show his hands and kept his left hand concealed in his waistband, Garcia said.

The officer, believing Ortega was armed, shot him, she said.

Investigators with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office are investigating the case, as is routine in officer-involved shootings.

Garcia said the investigation’s findings were unlikely to be released soon.

“They usually review everybody’s statements, and it usually takes a while, a generally a few months before we know what they found,” Garcia said.
