LOS ANGELES — A 14-year-old girl watching fireworks was shot and killed in downtown Los Angeles Sunday, and police are searching for her killers.

The shooting was reported just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of S. Toberman Street.

The teen was among dozens of people watching illegal fireworks in the neighborhood when at least five suspected gunmen rode up on bicycles and opened fire, according to Los Angeles Police Department investigators.

The girl was struck under her arm and later died at a hospital.

Police say the girl was an innocent victim of suspected gang violence, but was not the intended target. The girl’s identity has not been released.

It’s believed the suspects were aiming at rival gang members, according to police.

No arrests have been made.

One LAPD detective told KTLA that more than 100 people were celebrating the 4th of July in the streets at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information in the shooting is asked to contact LAPD officials at 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (527-3247). Callers may also text “CRIMES” with a cell phone.
