Stacy Haynes (ABC23) | July 7, 2014
Bakersfield police officers were monitoring gang activity at the front of the Republic bar located at 1919 K Street on Saturday, July 5, around 1:45 a.m.
Officer Keegan Gavin of the Special Enforcement Unit observed 18-year-old Adolphus Newell, who Officer Gavin knew.
When Officer Gavin attempted to talk to Newell, he fled on foot and discarded a loaded 9mm firearm before eluding police in a large crowd that had gathered.
Around 2:45 a.m. officers went to Newell’s residence in the 2700 block of Villalovos Court where they located and arrested Adolphus Newell.
When the officers were there, they came into contact with Adolphus Newell’s mother, 33-year-old Zunknie Newell, who officers say obstructed their investigation and assaulted one of the investigating officers.
