Graffiti includes death threats to Santa Cruz police officers

SANTA CRUZ — Graffiti found Thursday at Bay View Elementary School threatened the lives of Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark and four other officers.

The suspected gang tags also were found at Kaiser Permanente Arena and a building on the 800 block of Beach Street. Police said the vandalism represented an “escalation” in gang activity.

“It’s cowardly,” Clark said. “We have seen an increase in gang graffiti over the last couple weeks and it could be a precursor to other gang activity.”

The threats, left on a wall with hooks for backpacks, said “187 on” and the officers’ names — 187 is the California penal code for murder. It also included the name of Santa Cruz police detective Sgt. Loran “Butch” Baker, who was ki*led in February along with detective Elizabeth Butler during a sexual blankault investigation.

Clark gave no credence to the graffiti.
