A gunman shot and wounded a man during an attempted robbery Tuesday night outside a Santa Ana convenience store, the third shooting in that city in one day, police said today.

Two men approached the victim at about 9 p.m. outside an AM/PM market at McFadden Avenue and Fairview Street and were attempting to steal the victim’s bicycle when one of them opened fire with a handgun, said police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez, a department spokesman.

The victim was shot several times in the legs and arms and was taken to a local hospital, where he was in critical condition this morning, Gonzalez said. The suspects were not apprehended.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related and is being investigated by the department’s gang unit, Gonzalez said.

Early Tuesday morning, a Los Angeles resident was shot to death outside a Santa Ana mobile home park and a man was shot while in the garage of a home on Highland Street. No arrests were made in those shootings.

Tuesday’s homicide was the 15th in Santa Ana this year. Last year at this time, the city had 11 homicides, Gonzalez said.
