A Southeast Fresno gang operation led to 37 arrests this week.

The operation was done in response to an increase in gang violence throughout the City of Fresno.

According to Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer, the Southeast District Crime Suppression Team set-up the operation targeting gang members in hopes of preventing retaliation shootings, and restoring a “sense of security to law abiding citizens.”

Of the 37 arrests police made in the operation, 27 were for felony violations, and 10 were for misdemeanor crimes. Officers also conducted 50 parole and probation searches resulting in the arrests of four parolees, and six probationers.

Police say that a total of 12 gang members were taken off the streets and into custody.

The operation was the 20th large scale sting of its kind in the Southeast Policing District this year. Police say that a result of these operation has been the drop in violent crimes in the area by 26%.

Crimes are still occurring though, just this last weekend police reported five gang related shootings that resulted in two victims with non-life threatening gunshot injuries.
