Peter Cantu Executed: Ringleader of the Ertman and Pena Rape and Murder Killed

Jason Volentine (KIAH) – August 17, 2010
HUNTSVILLE — Convicted ki*ler Peter Cantu was dead Tuesday night, executed by the State of Texas for a crime that disgusted all of Houston.

In 1993, six gang members raped, ki*led, and brutally beat 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman and 16-year-old Elizabeth Pena beyond recognition. Cantu allegedly bragged to friends and family about being the ringleader of the incident, and he paid for it with his life.

Cantu had enchiladas, fajitas and a cinnamon bun for his final meal. At 6:09 p.m., lethal injection drugs entered Cantu’s body. Eight minutes later, he was dead.

He gave no final statement and showed no remorse for his acts.

The arrogance of the crime combined with the horror of it galvanized the entire city of Houston against the six gang members. Cantu was the final of three men condemned to die for the murders. He let out a final breath at 6:17 p.m. and peacefully died.

It was a death the victims’ families said was too good for the man who brought a violent and terrifying end to the lives of two teens 17 years ago.

“Put it this way: I wish my daughter could have died the way he died today. Wasn’t no pain. These girls went through an awful lot of pain when they died,” said Adolfo Pena, father of Elizabeth. “He deserved to die, and 17 years later he died. Not soon enough.”

Even now, both families say there is no closure.

“It does make a little difference. Three of the animals who did this are gone, but you know it doesn’t really make you feel any better,” Pena said.

“There’s no way to put closure on this,” said Jim Stacey, a close friend of the Ertman family. “Maybe some satisfaction, but no closure.”

  1. Sounds delicious! I just came back from mexico last year and find myself addicted to these incredible enchilada recipes now!! Must go back next year sometime, I think, and this time head off of the beaten road a little. Looking to reading more!

  2. Thanks for that. I moved to England when I was really young, and I really want to rediscover my heritage. I’ve been trying out a lot of random mexican recipes, and the best I’ve found yet is this taco recipe – it totally remind me of my childhood. I dont remember much of it except for the lovely smells and tasty food on every street corner.
