After love-triangle allegations, detective no longer with police

A Santa Ana police detective who allegedly was in a love triangle — one that included a gang member he was investigating and the man’s fiancee — is no longer with the Police Department.
As of Friday, Mitchell Graves, a veteran gang detective, is no longer an employee of the Santa Ana Police Department, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
The department conducted an investigation into Graves’ conduct, which was brought to various attorneys’ attention during the prosecution of Michael Granados for a 2008 attempted murder.
According to family members of the woman and of Granados, Graves would call the woman late at night; he also repeatedly offered to take her to dinner. The detective also allegedly told the woman that Granados was cheating on her. The advances led to sexual encounters over the course of about a year, the woman said.
On Friday, Granados was sentenced to 19 years in prison for an attempted murder in which he drove up to a man’s Santa Ana home and shot him about four times, prosecutors said. Originally, Granados faced life in prison, but because of the alleged police misconduct, prosecutors cut a deal.

An FBI agent was arrested Thursday after being indicted on charges stemming from allegations that he conducted a years-long affair with the wife of a man he twice helped put behind bars.
Special Agent Joe Gordwin, 39, was arrested at his Phoenix office and is facing six counts of wire fraud, five counts of making false statements and seven counts of witness tampering.
Thomas P. O’Brien, the U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said Gordwin broke the rules and the law by having an “improper sexual relationship” with the wife of a man he was investigating and then trying to cover it up.
