Convicted murderer from L.A. attacks two guards on death row

A Los Angeles gang member who was convicted of murder attacked two guards Thursday on death row at San Quentin State Prison, authorities said.
Timothy Joseph McGhee, 39, who was convicted of killing three people, used a hand-made weapon to attack the guards Thursday morning as they returned him a a shower to his cell, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. The guards received cuts and wounds on their heads, necks and arms and were treated at a hospital.
McGhee was considered by law enforcement to be one of Los Angeles’ most notorious street gang members. He boasted in rap lyrics about his hatred of police and his love for killing. He was described by police as a “monster” and thrill killer.
McGhee was a leader in the Toonerville Gang, which was formed in the 1950s and claims as its turf a largely middle-class area north of Los Feliz Boulevard between San Fernando Road and the Los Angeles River.
McGhee was also convicted of attempted murder for a July 4, 2000, ambush of two Los Angeles Police Department officers who were chasing Toonerville gang members. McGhee laughed as he was sentenced to die in January 2009.
