Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a riot in a state prison in Folsom that left 13 prisoners injured, including one who was shot in the region of his hip.
The incident started at 11:17 a.m. Wednesday in a maximum-security yard at California State Prison-Sacramento, adjacent to Folsom State Prison, according to authorities.
Officers shot six rounds from a Mini-14 rifle while trying to stop the riot and wounded one inmate in the “hip or flank” area, according to reports.
Twelve additional inmates were taken to hospitals with stab and slash wounds, as well as head injuries, officials said. Four were treated and returned to the prison.
