A brutal attack on a 13-year-old boy may be linked to a shooting earlier this month, both incidents the result of simmering tensions between street gangs in Woodland, police said.

Three assailants attacked the boy Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. while he was walking near the corner of Lemen Avenue and Donnelly Circle, according to the Woodland Police Department. The boy was beaten with a bat and stabbed in the upper torso, police said.

He was undergoing treatment at UC Davis Medical Center, said Lt. Charlie Wilts, Woodland Police Department spokesman. Wilts said the boy is expected to survive.

Tuesday night, Woodland police also received a call from Woodland Memorial Hospital that a 15-year-old had arrived there with a stab wound in his neck, police said.

Witnesses of the attack on the 13-year-old reported seeing a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle leaving the scene. About 9:30 p.m., police returned to the neighborhood after getting a reckless-driving report involving a dark-colored SUV and red Chrysler 300.

Three people in the SUV were taken into custody in connection with both attacks, said Wilts. Milton Escobedo, 18, was arrested on suspicion of assault and conspiracy, and two 15-year-old juveniles were arrested, one of whom faces an attempted-murder charge, police said.

Wilts said the investigation has linked the alleged attackers with the Norteño street gang and the victims with the Sureño street gang.

In addition, Wilts said there’s a “strong possibility” that Tuesday’s attacks are related to a Sept. 10 incident, in which a 16-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen at the city’s Campbell Park. Police are calling it a gang-related drive-by shooting, although Wilts said the victim had no gang affiliation.

The Norteño and Sureño street gangs dominate Woodland, Wilts said, and are responsible for much of the intergang strife in the city.

The 13-year-old boy was attacked in a section of Woodland dominated by subsidized housing. Yolo County Housing Authority director Lisa Baker said that to her knowledge, neither the alleged attackers nor the victims lived in the housing complex .

David Cortez Cedeno said he was watching TV when he heard a loud ruckus and stepped outside to make sure his property wasn’t being damaged.

He saw two men running in the street, he said, but he didn’t say anything to them.

“I’ve learned you don’t say anything unless you want attention brought to you,” Cedeno explained.

He said the area is normally calm but that there’s a large Norteño contingent that hangs around in the park next to the complex.

The recent spate of gang activity drew a packed house of concerned parents at the Woodland High School auditorium on Wednesday night.

Local law enforcement representatives were on hand to answer questions from the 200 people who attended a forum on gang violence sponsored by the Woodland Joint Unified School District.

Woodland Police Department Sgt. Tom Davis, supervisor of the department’s anti-gang unit, drew gasps from the crowd when he estimated there were about 670 validated gang members in the city of roughly 56,000 residents. Davis added that there were “several hundred others we haven’t made contact with.”

Sandi Burt of Rio Linda said she was concerned about the recent gang violence in Woodland and wanted to know whether her daughter would be safe at the school.

After a gun threat caused Woodland High to close at noon Sept. 12, she called the school to say her daughter was afraid to return.

When asked by a school official, Burt said her daughter was a freshman.

“She’ll get used to it,” Burt said she was told.
