A man suspected of kidnapping his 5-year-old son after fatally shooting the boy’s mother and another man was shot tonight by Anaheim police, authorities said.

Anthony Castillo, 31, encountered officers at Juno Avenue and Loara Street about 6 p.m. He was armed with a handgun when he was shot by the officers, said Sgt. Rick Martinez of the Anaheim Police Department.

“He refused to comply with commands, and they fired at him,” Martinez said.

Castillo was taken to a hospital, police said, but the extent of his injuries was not disclosed. [Updated at 10 p.m.: Police confirmed that Anthony Castillo died after he was shot by police, authorities said.]

It was unclear whether Castillo fired his weapon, but police recovered a handgun at the scene, Martinez said.

He said investigators had been pursuing leads that led them to the scene.

The double fatal shooting was reported about 4:45 a.m. at an apartment in the 200 block of South Rio Vista Street, near Lincoln Avenue, police said. Inside, officers found a woman who appeared to be in her 30s with a gunshot wound.

Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. A man, who investigators believe may be an acquaintance or boyfriend of the woman, also was found with a gunshot and was taken to UCI Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Martinez said.

An Amber Alert was issued shortly after 8 a.m. when investigators learned that the boy, Ometal Castillo, was reported missing from the apartment. But the alert was canceled about 10 a.m. after the boy was found at another relative’s home.
