Gang Riot Erupts in Venezuela Prison

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela contends that his socialist politics can bring about peace and harmony to his nation. But, his ‘hug-a-thug’ judicial system is literally showing that ‘the inmates are running the asylum,’ since prisoners have easy-access to semi-automatic weapons and hand grenades.

According to the BBC News, “a fight between rival gangs in a prison in Venezuela has left at least 10 prisoners dead, reports say. Inmates used automatic weapons and hand grenades in an eight-hour battle for control of Tocoron prison in Araguo state, Venezuelan media reported.”

President Chavez has provided no official statement on the violence, even though he regularly gives 8-hour-long speeches, which are broadcast live on his government-controlled TV stations.

The families of prisoners are demanding information from government officials. The country is plagued by increasing levels of violent crime and bloodshed is rampant in overcrowded jails.
