SANTA ANA – A gang-related attack left an 18-year-old man injured after at least a dozen teens and men kicked and punched him before firing off several shots Wednesday night, police said.

Authorities initially thought the man had been shot, but a trip to the emergency room revealed the bullets had missed.

The episode occurred at about 8:30 p.m. when the man was standing in front of an apartment complex in the 1800 block of South Evergreen Street, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Stephen Colon.

The initial police report said that the man was approached by a group of teenagers and men, believed to be gang members, who asked him what his gang affiliation was. Several of them were armed with handguns, which they used to threaten the victim, Colon said.

The group surrounded the man and began punching and kicking him numerous times in the upper body, Colon said. While he was being assaulted, the man heard gunshots, but he was not struck.

The teen, who told detectives he was a former gang member, was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. He is expected to live.

No arrests have been made.

Gang unit detectives are handling the investigation.
