King City police say officers foiled robbery

Staff report • October 6, 2008

King City police say they foiled an armed robbery Saturday night, arresting two Sureño street gang members on the 300 block of Ellis Street.

At 10:02 p.m., police said, officers responding to another call noticed an altercation involving three people a block away.

They said one of them, a man, managed to break free of the scuffle and contacted one of the officers — reporting that he was being robbed at gunpoint.

Police said the officers ran after the other two people and arrested Michael Raymond Diaz, 19, who was found hiding underneath a parked vehicle.

A 9mm semi-automatic handgun was also located underneath the vehicle Diaz was hiding under, they said.

Police said officers also arrested the second suspect, Deanna Mendez, 21, after canvassing of the area. A concealed switch blade was discovered on her person, they said, and she was subsequently arrested.

Both were booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of robbery, participation in a criminal street gang activity, criminal street gang enhancement, criminal conspiracy, possession of a switch blade knife and gang member in possession of a gun utilized during a crime.
