Deputies shutter Lauderdale Lakes pirate radio station

LAUDERDALE LAKES — Authorities say an aspiring rapper called Blakk Babi and another man were taken into custody Thursday when deputies shut down a pirate radio station in a home garage.

Authorities identified the rapper by his real name, Mikhail Rhodd, 22, and arrested him on a charge of unauthorized transmission to or interference with a public or commercial radion station licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. Rhodd, who lives at the house that was raided, also was being held Thursday night in the Broward Main Jail on a probation violation.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office identified the other man arrested as Maurice Roland, 22, of Miami, who was charged with obstructing the execution of a search warrant. Roland also had been wanted on a capias from a Miami-Dade battery case, officials said.

Deputies converged on the house in the 3900 block of Northwest 34th Way about noon Thursday and found found evidence that included Blakk Babi CDs with his picture on the cover, a microphone and a laptop, officials said.

The rapper, who has his own MySpace page, was directly involved in the operation run out the garage of the peach-colored house, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A MySpace page promoting the illegal station billed it as 89.5 Trap Radio, the “Official Voice of the Hood.”

The station was broadcasting weekends and nights through 89.5 FM, playing rap music with offensive lyrics that interfered with Christian and classical music from two nearby, legitimate stations, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella.
