For the jury deciding the fate of anti-gang activist Terrance Roberts, the decision may rest with a pocket knife.

When Roberts shot Hasan Jones before the start of a peace rally on Sept. 20, 2013, he threw a knife onto Jones’ limp body. After the shooting, Roberts told people that Jones had come after him with a knife, Alma Staub, a prosecutor in the Denver district attorney’s office, said Wednesday during closing arguments of the trial.

“Remember,” Staub told the jury. “He throws that knife down on Hasan Jones when Hasan Jones is lying there paralyzed, bleeding, on his way to dying. He puts the knife on Hasan Jones so he has justification for shooting him.”

Roberts has said he thought Jones had a knife and he found that particular knife earlier in the day along with a threatening note.

The jury began deliberations in the attempted murder case during the lunch hour Wednesday after both sides made their final case about the shooting. They had not reached a verdict by 5 p.m. and were dismissed for the night. They will return at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
