Wayne A. Day, a longtime Los Angeles gang leader who was accused of helping to create a national drug trafficking network, has been convicted of conspiracy to distribute powder and crack cocaine, as well as distribution of narcotics.

Day, 40, was indicted in May but initially avoided arrest during a nationwide sweep that charged 48 other suspects with crimes. Day eluded authorities that day, but later was arrested in Las Vegas.

Nora M. Manella, the U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said Day’s conviction marked an important achievement for authorities who have long suspected him in gang activities.

Day’s conviction carries a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 years, prosecutors said. In addition, he faces a second trial later this month on charges of possessing stolen property.
