Ottawa gangs recruiting 10-year-olds

Ottawa’s gangs are recruiting children as young as 10 years old, according to studies revealed by Ottawa police.

Police, youth gang experts and members of the community all expressed concern Monday evening at Ben Franklin Place in south Ottawa.

Over 200 people attended the information session that revealed details on how young people join gangs and why they choose that path.

Carleton University professor Katharine Kelly, who interviewed more than a dozen gang members in her research, said most young kids seek wealth amongst impoverished neighbourhoods.

“I think [it is] the temptation of easy money and seeing all those things that everyone around you has or seems to have,” said Kelly, who specializes in youth in conflict with the law.
