Three arrested in gang-related Gonzales robbery conspiracy

October 30, 2008

Gonzales police said they arrested a 33-year-old man and two 17-year-old boys on suspicion of a home invasion robbery around midnight Saturday on the 800 block of Alta Street.

Police said the two juveniles, members of a Norteño street gang, forced their way into an apartment in the Violini Labor Camp and stole the residents’ money at knifepoint.

At 12:40 a.m., police said, K-9 units from the Salinas Police Department and Monterey County Sheriff’s Office helped track down the suspects, who were hiding in a nearby asparagus field.

Police investigators later learned that Orlando Gonzalez, a gang affiliate related to one of the boys, had conspired with the juveniles to rob Mexican nationals at the camp.

As a diversion to allow the juveniles time to hide, they said, Gonzalez called in a fake bomb threat at Carlitas Steakhouse and Bar on the 100 block of Alta Street.

He was arrested Monday when a patrol officer pulled Gonzalez over on suspicion of driving under the influence and recognized his face.

The juveniles were booked into jail on suspicion of robbery, burglary, conspiracy and gang enhancement charges.

Gonzalez was booked on suspicion of conspiracy, robbery, making a false bomb threat and gang enhancement.
