Tyshawn Lee, who was walking to his grandmother’s house Monday afternoon, was “lured” into an alley and executed in what McCarthy called “probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing.”
He spoke at a news conference from the South Side alley in the Gresham neighborhood where Tyshawn’s grandmother found his body with the basketball he took everywhere with him.
“At this point, we believe that Tyshawn was targeted, lured to this spot and murdered. We believe that this is the most recent in a series of gang-related, violent events,” McCarthy said. “We believe Tyshawn’s father has ties to a gang that is in conflict with another gang.”
The murder of the 9-year-old boy stems from a bloody clash between the Killa Ward faction of the Gangster Disciples and the Terror Dome faction of the Black P Stones, law enforcement sources told the Chicago Tribune.
