Two gang members were in custody today, including one who fired on an LAPD officer in an ambush in Watts, striking the radio on his belt and piercing his shirt but causing no injury, police said.

The officer and his partner — both from the LAPD’s Southeast Station — were on patrol on 115th Street east of Alvaro Street when they were ambushed near the Nickerson Gardens housing complex shortly before 10 p.m. yesterday, said LAPD Sgt. Henry Quan.

Two men, both known gang members, came around a corner and one of them opened fire on the officers from a distance of between five and 10 feet, Quan said.

When the officers got out of their patrol car to confront the two gang members, bullets struck the passenger officer’s radio and pierced his shirt, but neither officer was hurt, Quan said.

The two men fled into the housing complex but were quickly tracked down by police and identified by the ambushed officers as the ones being pursued, Quan said, adding that the weapon used in the ambush was not immediately recovered.

At least one of the men is expected to be booked on suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer.

Last month, “one sergeant got sniped at in the Imperial Courts housing development, east of where it happened tonight,” Quan said. The sergeant was unhurt and the shooter has not been found, he said.
