Jackson County Legislature gives $60,000 to Southern Christian Leadership Conference before budget is OK’d

MICHAEL MANSUR (The Kansas City Star) | November 29, 2010

The Jackson County Legislature on Monday agreed to give $60,000 to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from the county’s 2011 budget — even though the legislature hasn’t approved that budget.

Most of the money, $40,000, will come from the county’s health fund and $20,000 will come from the anti-drug fund.

Legislator Bob Spence voted against the proposal, arguing that health and anti-drug funds should not be used for an SCLC of Greater Kansas City event.

“If we’re going to do this, we’ve got to quit raiding the health fund and that anti-drug fund to do it,” Spence said.

The legislature has until mid-December to approve the 2011 budget.

SCLC officials noted in their application for the money that it will be used for a Martin Luther King Celebration and help pay for a variety of other community programs, including a luncheon on health issues, presentations on alternatives to drug use, as well as a community interfaith service.

The legislature also agreed Monday to use $35,000 in 2010 COMBAT anti-drug funds to pay for an blankessment of gang activity in Jackson County.
