Crews Demolish Independence ‘Eyesore’

WDAF-TV | November 29, 2010
INDEPENDENCE, MO — Residents in a western Independence neighborhood have called an abandoned apartment building an eyesore and a danger for years. On Monday, demolition crews are doing something about it.

Crews began dismantling the building at 710 South Overton around 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning. Officials with 12 Blocks West, the neighborhood organization representing parts of Independence, Sugar Creek and Blue Summit, say that the demolition will mark the beginning of a revitalization effort that long-time residents of Overton feel is severely overdue.

Homeowners in the area say that the building had become notorious for gang activity.

“The Overton project is the first of site projects that will initiate change to the face of western Independence block by block,” said 12 Blocks West president and Independence School superintendent Dr. Jim Hinson in a statement. “Our community has united, silos have been torn down, and we are working toward common goals. It’s exciting to see the constructive change taking place. Lives of children and families will be positively impacted across our community for years to come.”
