Salinas’ CASP invites residents to ‘be part of solution’

KIMBER SOLANA (The Californian) | November 29, 2010

A Salinas grassroots organization dedicated to reducing youth and gang violence is inviting the public to its latest community meeting, where it hopes to continue laying the groundwork for achieving peace.

The meeting is organized by the Community Alliance for Safety and Peace, or CASP — a coalition of about three dozen government and nonprofit organizations.

The third “A Community Dialogue for Change,” set for Tuesday evening, comes about one week after the city saw a string of gang-related shootings — two of them fatal.

“This really is an opportunity for everyone to be part of the solution,” said Antonia Herrera, CASP’s new program manager. “This dialogue is so important because it provides a bridge between the community and city leaders.”

Tuesday’s meeting will focus on defining, or figuring out the steps, to address six key issues that participants have identified to help reduce violence. This year, the city has seen 18 criminal homicides — 15 of which are gang-related.The key issues identified were: socio-economic conditions; unsupervised/unengaged children and youth; inadequate environment/design; education and schools; law enforcement; impact of drugs and alcohol.
