san jose gang crimeSAN JOSE — A 14-year-old San Jose boy has been charged as an adult for a gang-related stabbing that sent another teen to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has charged Christian Haro Cotero, 14, with attempted murder and a gang enhancement in the stabbing last month of a 17-year-old boy, according to prosecutor Scott Tsui.

If convicted as charged, Cotero could be sentenced to 19 years to life in prison but would be eligible for parole after 15 years, according to prosecutors.

The decision to charge a teen as an adult “is always a tough thing for us to evaluate,” Tsui said.

“Given the severity of the attack and the information available to us, how deliberate it was, we made the decision” to charge Cotero as an adult, Tsui said.

Cotero is accused of stabbing a 17-year-old boy who is purportedly a rival gang member, according to police.

On Nov. 17 at about 4:15 p.m., San Jose police responded to a home in the 2000 block of Terilyn Avenue in San Jose after receiving a call that a person had been stabbed. When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy suffering from at least one stab wound.

The teen was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The department’s gang investigations unit determined the teenage victim was confronted several streets away from where he was found and that he was followed by the suspect before the assault.

Detectives believe the stabbing happened because Cotero and the victim are members of rival gangs.
