Gang member sentenced to life in prison for student murder

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A gang member convicted in the 2009 shooting death of honor student Melody Ross was sentenced to 155 years to life in prison.

Ross was fatally shot after a homecoming football game at Wilson High School in Long Beach.

A jury convicted Tom Vinson of her murder, along with the attempted murders of two gang rivals who were the intended targets, but survived their wounds.

Co-defendant Daivion Davis was already sentenced to eight years in a juvenile facility.
