Castroville Gang Violence Heats Up

KCBA | Dec 28, 2010

CASTROVILLE, Calif.- Monday night marked the third shooting in Castroville in a matter of two weeks.  The woman who called 9-1-1 for that homicide said she looked out her window and saw the boy laying on the sidewalk.

The woman didn’t want to go on camera but told me Salinas may be used to the shootings, but those in Castroville aren’t.

Monterey County Sheriff investigators though, say this area where all three shootings happened is known as a Norteno strong hold, occupied by NSC or Northside Castro.

“Over the years we’ve had a lot of violence in that area. I can remember 20 years ago that area of Speegle and Sanchez St. was known for gang activity and it dropped off for a while, and picked back up, and then got quiet again, so it appears this is one of those times,” said Commander Mike Richards.

Salinas was so hot this past decade because of the Cap’s Saloon murder, its connection to operation Black Widow, not to mention all of the media and even a documentary film that followed it, that a lot of Salinas Nortenos probably moved to Castroville.
