A gang member has been sentenced to more than 43 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a man in a downtown Santa Rosa parking garage in 2006.

Joseph Kenneth Lopez Jr., 21, was convicted in June by a Sonoma County jury of second-degree murder, participating in a criminal street gang and being a felon in possession of a gun in the Dec. 3, 2006, slaying of Matthew Allen Toste.

On Wednesday, Judge Lawrence Antolini handed down the maximum sentence: 43 years and eight months to life in prison.

Toste, a 32-year-old Santa Rosa resident and father of a young son, was in the garage on the 500 block of Seventh Street with two women just after midnight when a group of men began harassing the women as they prepared to go to a nightclub.
