Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday kicked off the second year of the successful anti-gang program, Summer Night Lights, offering recreation programs to young people at 16 sites throughout the city.
Bolstered with corporate donations, Villaraigosa said the program has worked to reduce gang crime and to make parks safer for residents.
“This is our chance to show that programs like this work,” Villaraigosa said.
The program was developed in partnership with USC coach Pete Carroll’s non-profit organization, A Better LA, and resulted in a 17 percent drop in gang-related crimes.
The program will begin on July 8 and run through Sept. 5 and will be at the Hubert Humphrey Park in Pacoima, among other locations.
