FBI to aid Monterey County gang task force

The FBI is expected to release information Tuesday on its latest involvement with the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force.

The federal agency confirmed today that a special agent will be in attendance to share details and answer questions to the specifics of its involvement at a press conference at 10 a.m. today at Salinas City Hall, 200 Lincoln Ave.

No other information was disclosed today.

The Monterey County Joint Task Force Steering Committee announced, through a press release by the Salinas Police Department, that the following officials will attend the press conference: Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue, county Board of Supervisors, Salinas police Chief Louis Fetherolf, Marina police Chief Eddie Rodriguez, District Attorney Dean D. Flippo, Chief Probation Officer Manny Real and county joint gang task force members.

Donohue declined to comment today, referring all questions to Sheriff Mike Kanalakis, who also declined to comment.

“We want to expand our capacity with law enforcement, partnering with other law enforcement (agencies), both state and federal,” Donohue said.

The gang task force, in operation since 2005, is made up of agencies including the Sheriff’s Office, Probation Department, California Highway Patrol, Salinas police, Seaside police and Soledad police. The steering committee is the governing body that offers operational direction to the task force.

Over the years, the FBI, through its Safe Streets Gang Task Force, has conducted operations across the state, including in Monterey County, in its effort to nab criminal street gang members.
