NEW YORK CITY — Angelo Prisco, once one of the most powerful mobsters in New Jersey, was sentenced today to life in prison for racketeering, extortion, robbery and the murder of his cousin, authorities said.

The 70-year-old longtime captain in the Genovese crime family was convicted in April in federal court in Manhattan of a series of crimes, including arranging for the 1992 slaying of Angelo Sangiuolo, who was suspected of stealing from the syndicate.

Acting on the orders of then-boss Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, Prisco lured his cousin to a Bronx social club, where he was ordered into a van and shot to death before being dumped in a McDonald’s parking lot, authorities said.

Prisco has been in and out of prison for decades since being inducted into the Genovese crime family in the late 1970s. He made a name for himself as an enforcer in New York.

During the 1980s, he emerged as the brutish but understated leader of the crime family’s New Jersey faction after local boss John DiGilio was ki*led and dumped in the Hackensack River in 1988.

“This conviction and the life sentence imposed today on Angelo Prisco puts an end to his decades-long career as a leader of the Genovese Organized Crime Family — one marked by violence and intimidation,” said Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

A lawyer for Prisco did not return a telephone call seeking comment tonight.
