Juggalos take issue with label as a gang

Culture is about music, not violence, fans insist

juggalosThere’s nothing new about rap artists inviting controversy by glamorizing a thug lifestyle, with the most successful among them claiming ties to street gangs even as they move into mansions and get airplay on mainstream radio or music television.

A small niche within the rap scene, known as “horrorcore,” is a little different. The genre is mainly associated with Detroit shock artists Insane Clown Posse, but it has spawned a host of imitators who excite crowds with musical horror stories in which murder, rape and suicide are recurrent themes.

Insane Clown Posse can’t get its music on the radio, but claims to have 1 million devoted fans who call themselves “Juggalos” or “Juggalettes,” and sometimes paint their faces to look like wicked clowns. Some round out the look by carrying small axes, like the cartoon hatchet man associated with the band.

Authorities point to assaults in Colorado, Utah, Washington and elsewhere when they argue that small sets of Juggalos have formed street gangs and deserve to be prosecuted just as the better-known Bloods and Crips, or Norteños and Sureños.

A March 7 assault in Graceada Park brought the debate to Modesto.

“I guess that makes me a high-ranking gang member, like a shot caller or something,” joked Mario Delgado, who performs as Mars. He has played at festivals sponsored by Insane Clown Posse and recently moved from the East Bay to Modesto.

Mars was referring to an attack on a man who was at Graceada Park with his family. The assault was clownlike, yet brutal. It began with a teen running up to the man to demand a handshake and ended with a host of other Juggalos intervening to stop a fight.

The man had his leg broken in two places as his girlfriend and two daughters watched in horror.

Prosecutors say the Juggalos arrested at the park had all the ingredients of a criminal street gang: three or more members, a common sign or symbol (in this case the cartoon hatchet man), and banding together to commit a crime.

Brandon Ferrell, 18; Joshua Huggins, 17; Kurt Petersen, 22; and Larry Williams, 20, have pleaded not guilty and are in jail awaiting trial. News coverage of their case prompted a lot of feedback, including comments from people who say “true” Juggalos are opposed to violence.

What they are — and aren’t

A few Juggalos said they no longer would hang out in Graceada Park because fighting is wrong.

A former girlfriend of one defendant said fans are supposed to read between the lines to find meaning in songs that feature over-the-top violence.

A parent said he was irritated when his son got in trouble for wearing an Insane Clown Posse T-shirt to school because the boy never has been a troublemaker and was wrongly accused of being a gang member.

And a husband and father who likes the music said he sometimes paints his face for fun and spots people who are “down with the clown” all over town, identifying them by their tattoos or clothing or decals on their cars.

James Miller, 27, of Modesto thinks the park suspects misinterpreted the band’s message, saying it is not a call to arms but an open invitation to misfits who need a place to blow off some steam and will not be turned away at Juggalo events.

He hopes Juggalo culture doesn’t get a bad rap because of a few bad apples.

“I don’t stand on corners ‘claiming parks,’ ” Miller said. “I don’t go around assaulting people.”

During a hearing in the Graceada Park case, a crime analyst for the Modesto Police Department said local authorities have watched the Juggalos grow in numbers since their first contact with the group in 2005.

She said she has spent half of her time researching Juggalos in the past year, noting that her work includes surveying MySpace and other social networking Web sites to identify Insane Clown Posse fans who post photos of themselves throwing hand signs for WC, or “wicked clown.”

A prosecutor said authorities have documented 38 Juggalos as gang members, including four who have been found guilty of assault, burglary and carjacking in Juvenile Court.

Profiled by T-shirts?

Harley Petero was surprised to learn that he is one of them.

Petero, a contractor and father of five, recalled a scene more than a year ago when his 17-year-old son and others were walking from their home in Modesto’s airport neighborhood to a market to buy milk.

Members of the Central Valley Gang Impact Task Force swooped down upon the boy and his girlfriend, so Petero walked over to see what was going on.

The father, his son and the son’s girlfriend were wearing Insane Clown Posse T-shirts.

The officers asked all sorts of questions and took pictures.

More than a year later, a defense investigator came calling, Petero said, because father, son and girlfriend are on the authorities’ list of documented Juggalos.

Petero, who goes to horrorcore shows with his kids, said he never has been arrested and should not be criminalized for making a fashion statement. He said violent images in the music are so over the top that no sane person could take them seriously.

“They’re like Deadheads — Deadheads for the new millennium,” said Petero, 43. “They just want to listen to this music.”

Petero’s wife, Tammy, worries because her husband and son could get slapped with a gang enhancement, and be subject to stiffer penalties if they are accused of a crime. She said one of her other sons, who was wearing a Lynard Skynard T-shirt, also walked over to check out the scene.

“They didn’t say a word to him,” said Tammy Petero, 36.

Define ‘gang member’

Defense attorney Bill Miller represents Huggins, a minor who is charged as an adult in the Graceada Park case. He said gang laws give broad discretion to authorities. As Miller put it, “The Legislature didn’t define what a gang member is, and the cops just make it up themselves.”

Huggins and two of the other defendants face up to four years in prison if convicted of assault and three years more if a jury believes they are gang members.

Williams could rack up even more time because he was convicted of assault as a juvenile. The results of juvenile cases usually are confidential, but the prosecutor pointed to Williams’ juvenile record in court to back up the notion that Juggalos engage in a pattern of criminal activity.

Mars, the horrorcore artist who recently moved from Pittsburg to Modesto along with his girlfriend and 2-year-old son, said Juggalos are targeted across the nation, often by people who take the song lyrics literally.

He said he has played at a Woodstock-like festival Insane Clown Posse holds in Illinois each summer, claims to have been questioned by officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and was eager to talk about being blamed for a school shooting in northern Minnesota.

On March 21, 2005, 16-year-old Jeffrey Weise killed two people at his grandfather’s home on an American Indian reservation, then went to Red Lake High School, where he fatally shot five students and one teacher, then took his own life.

Weise left online journal entries showing that he was a big fan of Mars and another horrorcore rapper, Jimmy Donn, according to published reports. Mars, who performs in a mask like the one Hannibal Lector wore in the movie “Silence of the Lambs,” blames the troubled teen’s parents for the tragedy.

Mars thinks authorities go too far when they prosecute Juggalos as gang members because every group has a few people who commit crimes. He said Juggalos are just kids who have a weird sense of humor and wish it were Halloween every day.

The 29-year-old rapper said controversy makes his sales spike. So he hopes the debate rages on.

Mars’ latest album is called “School House Glock!”

    FUCK THIS SHIT!!!
if people are going to call us a gang then thats like calling every every person wearing a band t-shirt or band clothing gang members. because thats what we are, just devoted fans of a certain type of music.
this is pissing me off lately. just the other day i was called a gang member by the vp of my school and he told me i could not wear this clothing to school anymore. i dont do or sell drugs, i dont break laws unless they go against morality, and i actually have goals in life. i am not a gang member, nor do i affiliate myself with gang members. i am just a down for life juggalo that loves ICP and the family.
Clown means someone who is unaccepted made fun of and casted out by society. i grew up as a complete cast out, but when i became a juggalo i actually had people who cared about me and are going to be like real family to me for life. i am a juggalo for life and not a gang member.

This is to all the ignorant sons-of-bitches out there that either A) misrepresent the Los and Lettes or B) think we are a gang: WE ARE A FUCKING FAMILY NOT A GANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The moronic fools who are committing crimes within our family are the black sheeps. If you look at todays “normal families” you will see that there is one child that strays away from path of morality and into the life of crime. That doesn’t make the “normal families” gangs so why should our family be considered a gang? My high school English teacher was a Juggalo, a father, and owned his own company. My cousin is a Juggalo and a member of an actual gang. The lyrics aren’t what causes the illegal activity. Thats caused by ignorant, closed-minded people not understanding the message the lyrics portray. I have lived in 5 states in the last 2 years and run into Faygo drinking Los and Lettes in all of them. Yes some of them smoked weed, but its 2010 the shits practically legal in most states now anyhow. I myself am a single mother raising my child with the support of my Juggalo family. My son is being raised as a Lo until hes old enough to decide where he wants fit in at. He will always be considered as a part of the Juggalo family no matter what he decides when hes older. I was raised as a Lette and have never been in any legal trouble or even got into trouble in school. Yes I do sport the gear and HELL YES I am proud to be a Lette!!! I’m Down With the Clown for Life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. if da juggalos are a gang the they da biggest gang in the world cuz i dont know of any gang but the ploice that has millons of members claimin the same thing u wanna see gang go to compton fagggots mcl

  6. Rdly-Lette_4life

Overall, none of us lo’s or lette’s are bad. It is the wannabe lo’s and lette’s that make us look bad! I am very well educated, (4.0 at a University as a matter-of-fact) so don’t judge sayin that we’re all stupid and have no regard for anyone else. Yes, we define ourselves as “family” but it is most definitely NOT in the same sense as a gang. Gangs are more violent. Our definition of family is that we’re here for each other, not to fight or kill others or commit crimes, but in any other sense of the phrase. We understand each other, we didn’t fit in, but now we’ve found where we belong. If one of us is down, we all try to help that person back up. To consider us worthless pieces of shit like real gangs, is a total insult, cut that isn’t what we’re about. get your facts straight before you judge. We have a symbol or something we all wear, so what? That doesn’t mean we are a gang. If you wanna say that people who wear the same thing are in gangs, then everyone from any walk of life is a gang. from any high school stereotype like emos, scene kids, goth kids, jocks, preps, or even adults who wear the same thing, like business people all in suits, military, police, hospital personnel, they all dress alike so “OMG” they must be in a gang cuz they all look alike! Come one people. Get real! Just because we consider each othe3r family and we all wear the same things, does not make us a gang. One more thing, listen to their song “Miracles” off their Bang Pow Boom album, they talk about the miracles in life, nature, their own families. Not violent in any way as you all say we are. I could go on all day. Bottom line, do your research, peace out. And to my family W.C.L.! <3

Fuk u its Like Saying Maggots is a Gang
    Whoop whoop

  8. elo

That’s like saying everyone who wears a Slayer shirt is in a gang.

  9. man this is all BULL SHIT i’m a juggalo but you don’t see me taking their lyrics too literal, i just don’t take crap from anyone who disrespect my friends and family, thats called standing up for them fuck nuts. yea i have an axe only to chop woods for my family in the winter time, i don’t use it to chop peoples head off. those who take the lyrics too literal are fuking retards that arn’t mature enough to understand its just music not a guide line to life. thnx to those fukers cops luk at me like im up 2 sumthin even though im just done with college for the day, yea thats right i go to college big deal im not the only juggalo/juggalette trying to make something of themself. M.C.L. family (not a gang slang).WHOOP WHOOP IM OUT

  10. spike

this is going out to whatamoron
there are a lot of adults who are down or like the music
Kane Hodder the actor who plays Jason Vorhees is a juggalo
my uncle who is 55 still reps the hatchet
    Ice cube
Snoop Dogg[not really the best influence though]
    Drowning Pool
    Tommy Lee
    the list goes on
the majority may not be great roll models but they are still old and they are still down

  11. i am never afraid to admit to being a juggalo, i am a foul mouthed extreme fan[as most deem us] of horrorcore/acid rap. i spend my free time hanging out with friends juggalo and non-juggalo alike, other times i am either working, going to school or spending time with my juggalette girlfriend and my son. i have one crime i am still on trial for which was for the statutory rape of a girl who lied to me about her age. i do not condone violence except for fights which are set up[boxing, wrestling, mma, etc] i love my fellow juggalos as a family, not as people to commit crimes with, but as brothers, sisters and cousins. i do not affiliate myself with gang members aside from Hells Angels who i was raised around by my stepfather.
my friends and i do not rob, do not kill, yes some do sell drugs but that is a small quantity of them who feel they can not do anything better with their lives, and we all try as a family to set them on a better path for a better future.
people say that we will go nowhere and are failures at life, i myself am a high school graduate with 3 years of trade school and 2 years of college at 20 years old, i also have a job and life goals.
the majority of the juggalos i “chill” with are graduates or plan to graduate and get legitimate jobs or have enlisted or plan to enlist in the military.

i don’t understand how we are classified as a gang? yes we have a handful of idiots who go rogue and fall into a life of crime, but so does every group. so do the people that uphold our freedom, Lee Harvey Oswald was a Marine and ended up killing Kennedy, he also dressed in a uniform distinctive of a certain group that makes there living by killing people, does that make the Marines a gang because one idiot fucked up? i think not.

i am a juggalo and proud to represent for the hatchet and all of my fellow juggalos, i have nothing but love for the ones who keep it real, and i wave my middle finger high for those who have done these despicable acts that have given us this bad name.

    MMFWCL Juggalos
    your favorite juggalo homie

  12. damn we aint a gang we family get that thru ur fat ass heads and dont critisize us cuz u think we dont belong we dont want to belong dats why we got eachother and to my family mmfwcl woop
    woop!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. was up im a juggalo 4 life straght up and im not in a gang its about much love for family and the clowns so stay true to your self and drink that faygo becuse us juggalos never die we live forever oh yeah and i will always be down with the clowns no matter.

  14. Lil Suicide

Being a juggalette myself -not a suicidal individual btw- i can also understand how everything about us clowns is misinterpreted.
Your trying to convince people, who live average lives, that we are more than we portray ourselves as. The majority probably think they understand what a gang is and what it means to be in one, but they dont.
To joe… Thats pretty damn impressive ninja. Best of luck with getting into the FBI, seriously. Im also trying to get a BA in psychology.
TayyZerr…. you made a ton of valid points, and i agree with you.
personally, after reading more about the Juggalo Holocaust, i find that there is a lot of dispute over whether or not they are real. I know they are. Seen it firsthand but no violence or verbal communication occured. They didnt realize that i was a lette cause i dont own any gear or a hatchet as a matter of fact. (So to the police who make assumptions about juggalos that you see on the street, understand that being a juggalo does not require the clothing or the weaponry.)
I think that if anyone should be profiling anyone else as gang members, this alleged Juggalo Holocaust should take the wrap. They openly admit to crimes of assault, rape, and murder in various sites on the web. They constantly say that juggalos should be exterminated. They have a symbol that labels them under a specific group…. Why doesnt the gang task force look into that?
I grew up around gangs and they dont act like a family persay. Its different for everyone depending on where your from, but gang members in my area treat it like its just an operation or a simple job.

  15. TayyZerr

FAKE ASS JUGGALOS GIVIN’ US A BAD NAME! SHIT WHEN WILL YOU DUMASZES UNDERSTAND WE’RE A FAMILY! This family is just a handful of people who have not been accepted in society and we look for comfort and friends in the carnival, cuz we know we wont get hollered at or ade fun of or bullied. The family is people who have many things in commom.

about the lyrics, yes they are fucking violent, but you dumaszes dont know shyt, every good song made has a message in it, whether good or bad, yuu just have to find it. I love the music because they are all positive if you find tah t one message…

We dislike people who judge on what they see. Fucking bigots, hypocrytes, wannabes and bitches.
You’ve seen that there are more then 3 members,
you see we have a symbol to represent us,
you see that some of the “los and lettes” commit crimes.

Do you even have any fucking idea what it all means?
FAKE ASS PUTOS, YOU PISS ME THE FUCK OFF, A REAL JUGGALO OR LETTE KNOWS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT, AND IT AINT ABOUT VIOLENCE

GET THIS THROUGH YOUR THICK, CLOSE MINDED SKULLS SOCIETY

REAL FAMILY DONT WANT VIOLENCE, WE JUST WANT TO LIVE WITH LOVE, A FAMILY THERE BY OUR SIDES, A FUCKING FRIEND AND AN ENTRANCE TO SHANGRI-LA (heaven)
“JUGGALOS AND LETTES” WHO COMMIT CRIMES ARE JUST A COUPLE OF STUPID FUCKS WITH CLOSED MINDS WHO NEVER FOUND THE FUCKING MESSAGE. DONT YOU GET IT BITCHES? ITS ABOUT THE FAM AND ITS ABOUT GOD AND THE MUSIC AND THATS IT, THE VIOLENCE IS THE LEAST IMPORTANT TO US. ALL WE EVER WANTED WAS TO BE ACCEPTED, TO HAVE A FAMILY AND
YOU STUPID IDIOTS ARE TAKING THAT AWAY

Did you know this has saved many from suicide? I’m not kidding, suicide is caused by so much shyt but the people who think they have nobody have turned to us. and now they live life drinkin faygo, smilin big like a clown cuz they know that they have someone now. I speak for me and all those who would love to be spoken for

  19. What a moron!

Oh yeah, and most juggalos and juggalettes I’ve met do band together to commit crimes (like gangs). DRUGS ARE ILLEGAL. Whether you want it to be legal or not, you’re not helping society by breaking the law. Why don’t you make a positive impact instead of a stupid one with make-up on your face and a bunch of cussing and complaints while drinking and doing drugs. Yeah…you’re a role model for all of us.

    • Juggalo, a word that incites so much hatred upon people who truly does not understand what it means.. I am a juggalo, and I stand proud, I have a t-shirt and I have a hatchetman tattoo on my right arm.. I am by law conciderd a gang member, and I have chosen to accept that there is ignorant people that plagues america. people classify all juggalos as drug addicted alcoholics as I read in the above posts and I cannot help but smile, we are an organized family each having his or her own views, as you would have your own freinds togeather with the same ideals.. what i find the most intresting is that people turn a blind eye too the other gangs out there..

one example and it is the most extreme, but I feel like going there..

Christianity (and all sects that is involved) is one of the biggest prime example as a gang.
three or more people with the same ideals, meeting under the same exact banner to accomplish a goal, even religion has shed blood under one banner, Crusades anyone? Spanish Inquisition?

Falling under one symbol, a holy cross that many has even branded their bodies with.. but are these gang members? apparently not.

Do not get me wrong i am no way anti-religious, infact I am very religious, due to the Insane Clown Posse, I have found a family and god, through their six main CD’s also known as “The Six” or “The Six Jokers Cards” each CD holds a meaning that is all that is holy.

The Carnival is God..and I will Die for the Carnival, and the clowns are no more then self ordained prophets to spread their word in the way they know.. the term “wicked” is known as evil, but for those who see’s with clear eyes know their true meaning.

Stereotyping…and being a moron….AND being a no life troll is also not a positive image as well to sell.

  20. What a moron!

It’s a gang. Read the definition. All gangs can be like “families.” I’ve taught many kids who claim to be juggalos and juggalettes, and they don’t like being called part of a “gang.” They wear the symbol, fit the profile, etc., so tough luck…their choice. Not all of them cause as much drama as others, but they still support the overall theme. Insane Clown Posse is lame anyway, and I can’t believe people actually think they’re cool. Notice that no adults are in it because we all see how stupid it is. I absolutely love my students, and some of the ones who are juggalos and juggalettes are my favorites, but a gang is a family too. And freedom of speech doesn’t mean you can say whatever you want. If that was the case, I would look most of you in the eye and tell you how ridiculous you sound. But since I don’t want to use my freedom of speech to only express my side, I’ll listen to other people too. Cuss me out for saying this if you want, but keep in mind that freedom of speech doesn’t just apply to you. I’m sure our founding fathers and those who fought for freedom would be ashamed of how people twist it to their own benefit these days. And yes, Emo kids can be considered gang members too; however, they don’t have a symbol that represents them as much.

    • joe

well let’s see. I’m guessing you’re a teacher since you refer to kid’s as students. last time I checked all teachers have to have a teaching degree….correct? that is a symbol that represents you all as a group. Your group is bigger than 3 people. you are also a group of people that come together to commit a crime. your crime is that you fail the students of America. I’m sure if you dig back in to your memories you can remember a time you failed a student or 20. so by those three point’s you your self are a gang member. oh yes, I am an adult, a Juggalo, and guess what…. a US Soldier working military intelligence.
I have been to Iraq to fight for your freedom to sit there and talk down on us. You will never understand Lo’s and Lette’s because you are not one. I’ve never been to jail, never done drugs, and never beaten any one up. Well being a full time Soldier “working 12-18 hours a day 5-7 days a week” I managed to earn my associates in psychology and I am currently working on my Bachelors. After I finish that I plan on applying for the FBI to become a special agent.
I understand that when I listen to ICP that there words are not meant to be taken at face value. You have to see the satire there music plays on life. Do this for me, get your hands on a CD called “The Wraith: Shangri-La”. Sit down and listen to every song 3 times in a row. Pay close attention to the words they say. After putting them all together you can see the story it tells under the surface. That is the closest you will ever get to understanding us.

    • Raven

Well, if legality equates to morality, “moron,” then how about this: Would you have enforceed the slave codes, kept my people in chains since that was at one time the “law?” Not all rules should be followed. If a rule defies humanity, then it must NOT only NOT be obeyed, but it also must be destroyed. Just ask the Jews who perished in the Holocaust since many Germans decided to “follow the law” and keep mum about the situation.

      • Minidox

hey im a juggalo and im German and i live in a house hold of african americans so dont even try all that i could care less what race or what history people have. real juggalos dont like the violence.

  21. A JUGGALO NIGGA SHWN MD

yall reporter niggas are dumbass bigots lol we aint so called gangbangers we dont rep a set standin on the corner beatin up people for wearin red or blue hahahha we love the fucking music thats all we gott alot of motherfuckin clown love! im a mofuckin juggalo! yall cant stop my freedom of speech mofuckin haters! we are just a fuckin family!

  22. BreezYDaNinjette

I just wanted to bring this to the juggalos attention. I my self am a Juggalette. I’m doing a paper for shcool on why juggalos should not be considered a gang. There are a lot if interesting articles out there about the subject. In my city we are considerd a gang. I’m a reguar person just like anyone else. There are a select few out there who ruin the juggalo name because of stupid shit they them selves do. Not all there friends who are juggalos. A single persons actions should not reflect on a group of wide spread people. As far as us being a family i have talked to many news papers and that is one comment they seem to think is gang related. I have not heard of any juggalos getting jumped in or selling drugs for a gang or even commiting orginized crime. The classifications for a gang are: Orginized crime, drug trafficing, 1 symbol used by many. Im sorry but i see emo kids all the time in groups wearing 3 belts each are they a gang? No! There are juggalos and juggalettes who claim to be gang members. From all the los and lettes iv talked to these people are considered FAKE! We want to live our life how we want withour getting flexed on.

man how retarded are these people juggalos and juggalettes are not a gang they are a family and if you want to call us a gang then what the hell do you consider the government or the military or the police. i mean come on they go over to other countries and kill innocent children, women, men, and the elderly by blowing their heads off hanging them and other inhuman ways and people who are misfits that get together to feel like they fit in and are accepted for who they are on the inside are labled as gang members well thats not right not even a little bit cuz some take the lyrics to heart and act on how they feel doesnt make the rest of us all bad and mean that we are all in gangs

This is funny! Lol. Hahaha. Dude, I grew up with Juggalos and Juggalettes. They are pretty chill ass people. Its all about clown love and being there for your homies. Drinking 40′s and making fun of bigots. Get over it. Come on, an ICP gang?
