Oxnard police arrested seven suspected gang members this week after two incidents involving firearms, officials said.

The first two suspects were arrested Sunday in the 300 block of Cuesta Del Mar Drive in Oxnard. Members of the Oxnard Police Department’s gang unit were working near Southwinds Park when they saw several gang members loitering and hiding near open carports and a Dumpster, police said.

When officers approached, two young men discarded loaded handguns and ran away, police said. The two were arrested after a short foot chase through the park and onto d#$kens Drive, police said.

Jovanny Hernandez, 21, of Oxnard was booked into county jail on suspicion of street terrorism, carrying a loaded firearm for the furtherance of a gang, and evading arrest. A 17-year-old Oxnard resident was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of gang and weapons charges, police said.

Police arrested five other suspected gang members Tuesday after stopping a car for vehicle code violations. Officers who stopped the vehicle about 4 p.m. on San Gorgonio Avenue east of Rose Avenue recognized the Oxnard men as gang members and searched several of them as allowed by probation terms, police said.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded handgun and open alcohol containers, police said.

Giovanni Vega, 18, Joel Chaffee, 24, Edwin Zavala, 20, and Fabian Barrera, 25, were booked into county jail on suspicion of gang and firearms charges, authorities said. A 17-year-old boy was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of gang and weapons charges.
