Whitey Bulger’s many fake IDs released by prosecutors

Andrew Blankstein (Los Angeles Times) | August 17, 2011

The U.S. attorney’s office in Boston has released several fake identifications used by mobster Whitey Bulger during his years on the run.

Bulger and companion Catherine Greig lived for years hiding in plain sight in a Santa Monica apartment. Bulger had fled from Boston, wanted in connection with 19 homicides and other charges.

Authorities are trying to figure out how Bulger — one of the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives — was able to live fairly openly in Santa Monica. One key question is whether he got financial help. The FBI found more than $800,000 in cash inside the walls of the apartment.

The IDs were unsealed in a Boston court Wednesday as part of a hearing into whether Greig should be released on bail.
