LAPD Chief Beck says officers accused of sexual assault ‘disgraced themselves’

charlie beckCalling the case “horrific,” Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck on Wednesday said two officers charged with sexually assaulting women in Hollywood violated the public’s trust.

“These two officers have disgraced themselves,” Beck said at news conference at the department’s downtown headquarters. “They’ve disgraced their badge and the oath of office.”

Two LAPD veterans, James Christopher Nichols, 44, and Luis Gustavo Valenzuela, 43, were charged this week with sexually assaulting four women while the officers were on duty, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

The investigation into Nichols and Valenzuela, who worked as partners in the LAPD Hollywood division, began more than three years ago. One of the victims approached police officers and said she had been assaulted by an officer, Beck said.
