A California Highway Patrol officer was struck and ki*led when a car veered onto the shoulder of the freeway during a traffic stop in Barstow early Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 3:40 a.m. when CHP Officers Justin McGrory and Ryan Bostrom stopped a vehicle for speeding on the northbound I-15 just south of Hodge Road, authorities said.

McGrory and the driver were standing on the shoulder, to the right front of the patrol car, when a northbound red 2009 Pontiac G6 came from behind, clipped the right rear of the patrol car and struck McGrory.

The driver of the Pontiac, Rafael Garcia, 18, of Las Vegas, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, said CHP officer Paul Ellis. McGrory was airlifted to St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley, where he later died of his injuries.

Bostrom and the driver who had been pulled over were unharmed.
McGrory, 28, joined the CHP in 2007 and was blankigned to the Barstow area office. He is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 4 and 1.

Circumstances of the collision are still under investigation, Ellis said.
