Deputy Bryan Collins, who guarded inmates at Orleans Parish Prison for four years, resigned on Thursday (Dec. 5) as the threat of criminal prosecution looms over his bringing a cell phone into the jail and taking a picture of a bloody cell that was later published on NOLA.com.

“The newspaper protected Collins’ identity, at his request. But since he has agreed to go public, he said he sent the photos to the newspaper to clear his conscience,” writes Naomi Martin in a recent article.

Since Martin published the original OPP whistleblower story in October, many readers have urged Collins to tread cautiously, echoing the deputy’s concerns about retaliation. Some readers are now suggesting that Collins run for sheriff in the upcoming February elections:

I can not wait till Marlin is out of there, he sickens me!!!

Best of luck to you Mr. Collins, I wish you much success in your future endeavors! He’s a handsome fine young man, I might add too!

You have my vote if you run for Sheriff!
