Former Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean

United States Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean shot a fleeing drug smuggler in 2006. The smuggler survived, but Ramos & Compean lied about the incident, were exposed by another agent, and went on trial were they were found guilty of covering up details of a the shooting of Osvaldo Aldrete Dávila. They were sentenced to mandatory 11 year terms.

On September 25, 2007 a legal appeal concerning the conviction of Ramos and Compean was filed with the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans. On July 28, 2008 the Fifth Circuit court of appeals rejected the appeals of both Ramos and Compean.

On January 19, 2009, President Bush commuted the sentences of both Ramos and Compean, effectively ending their prison term on March 20, 2009.
