A Santa Clara County Jail deputy arrested on drug charges this week was charged with blankault Thursday after he told investigators that he fired a gun at a man he thought stole his truck, authorities said.

Juan Carlos Carillo, 48, was charged with six felonies and one misdemeanor after his employer — the sheriff’s office, armed with a warrant — searched his San Jose home Monday and interviewed him. Carillo, a 14-year veteran with the sheriff’s office, was placed on administrative leave and previously had been blankigned to work at the county’s main jail, where he now sits behind bars.

The sheriff’s office believed Carillo had let at least three known criminals live with him, partly in exchange for drugs. But the case filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court says Carillo was also high on meth when sheriff’s investigators interviewed him, and he subsequently admitted to new charges.

Carillo told authorities that in December he confronted a man he thought had stolen his pickup, then fired a shot next to him but did not hit him, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff’s deputies said they found rifles when searching Carillo’s home.

Because of the extra charges, a judge on Thursday increased Carillo’s bail from $121,000 to $700,000.

Carillo appeared in Superior Court but did not enter a plea. He is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 6.

The District Attorney’s Office charged Carillo with six felonies, including blankault with a firearm and with a deadly weapon, possessing and selling meth, and providing a home where drug deals occurred. He also faces a misdemeanor count for being high on meth.
