Seventeen gang members were arrested and multiple weapons were seized last week after Watsonville police increased patrol efforts in response to recent gang violence.

“In the past week, we have arrested 17 active gang members for fighting, possession of illegal weapons, narcotic possession, challenging to fight, parole and probation violations, restating arrest, and possession of firearms,” Sgt. Saul Gonzalez said.

Officers also seized weapons such as bats, sticks, kitchen knives, fixed-blade knives, hunting knives, screwdrivers and sharpened stabbing instruments.

Two firearms were seized from suspected gang members, Gonzalez said.

“Our officers used proactive enforcement to contact, detain and remove these weapons before violence occurred,” Gonzalez said.
