Former LAPD detective that was convicted of murder last March was sentence Friday by Judge Robert Perry to 27 years to life. Stephanie Lazarus, 52, has been incarcerated in the Los Angeles County jail since her 2009 arrest for the 1986 murder of Sherri Rasmussen, but she is on her way to Chowchilla, California where California’s two prisons for women are located.

Judge Perry sentenced her to the 1986 guidelines, 25 years for the murder and an additional 2 years for using a firearm during the commission of a murder. If she was sentenced to today’s sentencing rules she would have received 50 years which would have included 25 years for the firearm violation.

If she was charged for this crime in 1986, she would have been eligible for parole years ago, and she may have possibly been released by now for good behavior and/or over crowding. She has received 4 1/2 years credit for the last three years she has been in custody and she will be eligible for parole in 2029 when she is about 69-years-old.

On Wednesday, Pedro Espinoza, was convicted for the same offense, in the 2008 murder of Jamiel Shaw Jr., but he is eligible for the death penalty.
