A former San Diego police officer today was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for giving inside information to drug traffickers.

Juan Hurtado Tapia, 39, admitted that he used his status as a police officer last year to provide information to traffickers, including about a drug investigation. He also admitted that he had lied to federal agents about providing the information and that he was attempting to impede a drug investigation.

Tapia was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez as part of a plea bargain. Tapia was an officer for seven years and was lauded for his work in the auto-theft unit.
