An Orleans Parish Deputy was arrested on charges that he brought contraband into the Orleans Parish Prison according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s office.

Deputy Bryson Baptiste, 24, was booked on four counts of malfeasance in office and four counts of introduction of contraband into a jail. Baptiste joined OPSO in July 2012. Following his arrest, the sheriff’s office said that Baptiste was suspended without pay.

The arrest is part of an “ongoing pro-active effort” to keep contraband out of the jail, Sheriff Marlin Gussman’s release said. The issue of contraband entering Orleans Parish Prison brought national attention in May when videos shown in federal court were released depicting inmates shooting up drugs, guzzling beer and unloading a handgun in a cell.

The sheriff’s office also made large-scale arrests of suspects accused of smuggling contraband including drugs and cell phones into the prison in 2008 and 2009.

Another Orleans Parish Sheriff’s deputy, Dwayne Barnes, was arrested and charged on multiple counts of malfeasance and contraband introduction in 2011 after an internal investigation found he smuggled tobacco products and Mojo — a type of artificial marijuana — to inmates at the prison.

Baptiste was being held Thursday afternoon at the Orleans Parish Correctional Complex where he worked awaiting a bond setting.
