A man who led authorities on a high-speed chase in Sacramento County was killed early this morning after being shot multiple times by California Highway Patrol officers, officials said.

Officers attempted to pull over a white truck in Stockton about 2:30 a.m. when the driver, who was alone, sped onto the northbound 5 Freeway, said Sgt. Tim Curran, a spokesman for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Six CHP officers began a pursuit, with speeds reaching 100 mph, until the suspect exited the freeway at Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove, made a U-turn and was pinned against the freeway on-ramp guardrail by a CHP vehicle, Curran said.

An officer broke the driver’s-side window and deployed his Taser, Curran said.

The weapon was ineffective and the man drove his truck toward officers, who fired multiple rounds, Curran said. The man, who has not been identified but was thought to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two of the officers suffered minor injuries. The six officers were from the Stockton and South Sacramento field offices and were placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard CHP policy after such an incident, Curran said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
