Veteran cop Jose Tejada “violated everything the NYPD stands for” by running with a crew of thugs who robbed drug dealers of cash and cocaine, a federal prosecutor said Tuesday at the start of his trial.

Tejada, who joined the force in 1996 and was assigned to the 28th Precinct in Harlem, participated in at least three heists and also took his co-conspirators shopping in police equipment stores to buy paraphernalia to pass themselves off as cops, said Assistant Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Kenji Price.

“He used his gun and badge to rob and terrorize,” Price said.

Defense lawyer Joseph Tacopina told the jury the eight snitches who will testify for the government are lying to get out of the life sentences they face. Tejada, who also faces life behind bars if convicted of robbery and drug distribution, has been held without bail since he was arrested last spring.
